Also inside the envelope a regular postcard. Usually I don't post official postcards on this blog, but it is a nice and matching illustration, and the Bear increases my alibi to post FinnBadger's mail art here :-)

But these Dragons came in such an amazing mail art envelope, that I decided to use them as an alibi to post the envelope here on the Real Weird Animals blog.



And notice the stamps! Issued in honour of 150 years of Canada, the complete serie contains ten different stamps, depicting ten unforgettable moments from the past 50 years.

A gorgeous drawing of the Axolotl, accompanied by great typography, reached my mailbox. Created and sent from Canada by Erin Guerard.
The Axolotl is an amazing Amphibian, who keeps on living in the water when grown-up, in contrary to other amphibians who develop lungs and travel to land.

Denise Souray

Wow, see this Dragonfly! Amazing mixed media mail art created by Denise Souray from Canada.
When I watched closer, I suddenly saw that this Dargonfly has been created from unexpected, yet so suitable material. Do you see it?

And funny, coincidental: recently I was thinking of creating Maple leaf mail art to send to some other mail artist in Canada (I had collected some maple leaves last autumn for this purpose). I still didn't find enough time to do so, however at the same time, overseas, Denise must have turned these Maple seeds into this beautiful fragile insect.



And do we call a dragonfly (in Dutch: libelle) sometimes a helicopter for the way he/she stays in the air at the same place for some time, the maple seed we sometimes call a helicopter, too, when we have it fall from the third floor and see it turn like helicopter wings on its way to the ground!



By the way: see these wonderful Dinosaur stamps, too!

Anna Banana

The Aye-Aye is a fascinating mammal (as is mankind)!
In Dutch we call this animal 'Vingerdier', 'Finger animal', because of his long middle finger.
This time the Aye-Aye appeared on an envelope, created and sent by Anna Banana from Canada, as a thank you for colour test prints I had sent to Anna.



And in the envelope more great surprises: beautiful artistamps, a printed card, and a recent issue of the Zine 'Bananarag'.

I think it a sacrifice, or even: almost impossible, to cut in pieces and send away something dear. Kerosene did!

It's so miraculous (and weird!), the metamorphosis of butterflies.

And note so many kinds of animals on the backside: a bird, a human (skull), an other insect (I always wonder why people say 'aah' to butterflies and meanwhile slash these other innocent insects) and on the stamp a snake (whose year is soon to begin!).

Kerosene & Flypaper

'... not so long ago', Kerosene adds...
I think deforestation is such a shame and pity (and we all contribute to that, as long as we aren't aware of what we buy, and keep on buying). As biodiversity and all of our 'lungs' suffer from that highly. All rain forests who have gone, are gone for all our lifetimes... Protection and common sense needed!

What a big surprise! After having sent the very first contribution to the 'Solitude' mail art project, Carolyn Oord continued to make me happy by sending these eight weird mammals from Canada. Or even more animals (do I see moose or reindeer calves on the stamp? And a walking fish rubber stamp print!)!



Click on the image to enlarge. From left to right, you can see the Manatee, the Giant Anteater, the Tarsier, the Galago, the Kinkajou, the Aye-aye, the Bandicoot, and even predecessors of our present horse.

Wilma Duguay

When I think of Wilma Duguay, I think of the Sea!
Wilma Duguay sent this beautiful drawing from Canada. When I saw the pencil drawn animal, the first thing that came into my mind was: 'that must be a Sea urchin skeleton!'
Fortunately Wilma wrote the name of this animal next to it. Fortunately, because I never had heard of this animal before: the Sand dollar.

And indeed, this Sand dollar (in Spanish speaking countries also called 'Galleta de mar' - 'Sea cookie') is a curious animal. Read more about this echinoderm (stinged-skin) on wikipedia.

This makes me also wonder about the number '5'. Why, like also Starfish and Sea urchins have, Sand dollars always have a fivefold radial symmetry? (And why do we mammals have five fingers/toes each hand, each foot?)



On Wilma's mail artwork there are more weird Sea animals to see and to enjoy!

Wilma surprised me with a new letter, and put forward to make this apposite Sea magnet part of the Existing Odd Animals. So here you are!
(I added the back side next to the wonderful Sand dollar, Starfish and Shell.)



This fine work of art (only 5 x 4.5 cms) has been made by Linda Kobera, a painting artist who's pasisonate about miniature art.

Snappy

As I did before, also now I hesitated to open Snappy's beautifully packed entry, because the glimmering plastic of the envelope, the postage stamp, the par avion sticker and the Snappy Service Stamp are too contributing to the Mail Art work to be removed...

But the instruction sticker told me to do so, so here is the unveiled work:



Lots of weird animals are shown. The Penguin, a funny favourite friend. The Leaf-tailed gecko and, on the Canadian postage stamp, the Golden-eyed lacewing. On the drawing a Wolf teaching Geese (? I think) to read.



And of course Humans.
One of the weirdest (and imho one of the most foolish) things Humans can do is wearing guns and using them. So I prefer the man with the magnifying glass, of course.

Note the - for any animal useful - message (white letters on blue background) on top!
