Received from Dean, Artist in Seine, this great collage. I first thought the animal to be a Donkey, because of the tail and maybe long ears, but then I thought it a Zebra who was losing his or her stripes, thus becoming a Horse. Is my theory correct? I will never know, unless Dean gives a clue :-)

On the back side a Lizard or Varanus, and a ticket-giving-Human, along with some more Human beings.

The Komodo Varanus (or Komodo Dragon) always has fascinated me, and I am happy to receive this (presently largest) lizard, created by Tonipoet.

She created a pretty envelope around it, too. I am fond of cartoons and animation movies, so always happy to receive envelopes like this. It is from a movie which I didn't see though (I only saw part 1), 'How to train your Dragon 2'.

Ficus Strangulensis

At first sight I thought this picture a mix of random colours, but looking closer I found out that it existed of photos of Birds and Reptiles which seem to have met in a big mixing bath.
Reptiles, Birds... So they should be posted here.
Usually I don't draw in other people's art work, and I am not sure if the creator, Ficus Strangulensis, would agree if I'd take a felt pen or scissors to mark or cut out the individueal animals?



The art arrived in an envelope, of which the back also shows these colourful mixed-animals, now pictured on a favourite object for mail artists: a mailbox.

Inside Ficus enclosed some readable food for thought:





And the mail art arrived in exact the right season: spring. Also in the USA the Daffodils bloom then!

Dean / Artist in Seine

A dangerous and prehistoric looking reptile, but I'm sure she's a creative creature. Mail art created and sent by Artist in Seine.



Along this animal, a lot of cyclists also were sent by Dean. This time from the United Kingdom, which of course makes us wonder why the Tour de France is called the Tour of France, and not the Tour de Royaume-Uni-et-France this year?

Alison from South Africa created this beautiful envelope. See the Ladybird on the postage stamp! And a Caracal, and of course the Air Mail Bird.

Inside this envelope she sent a nice letter, accompanied by the postcard you see below. Speaking about South-African animals, usually the 'Big Five' come into mind. And the Giraffe, and Zebra.
However, there are of course many more animals. Among them these 'Ugly Five'.



I think these 'Ugly Five' at least as interesting as the more well-known African animals. They usually have a bad image, not only for their appearance, but also their behaviour is thought to be bad. Which is exaggerated by negative propaganda by movies like the Lion King (o.k. the Warthog has got a more sympathetic imago by this movie).

The 'Ugly Five' are very important animals in the whole circle of life. What would we do without them? How would the landscape look like, without these weird useful creatures? The Hyena and Crocodile allow herbivores to not starve from hunger, by eating some of them. And the Hyena, Marabou Stork and Vulture are the cleaners of the savannah.
And the Warthog, well, it's just a cute animal, holding the tail as an antenna when he/she runs around.

Connie Jean

The Aye-aye already has been considered a weird animal a few times here (and there), but I've never seen this extraordinary fellow this close!
And until now I never realized that this ant eating mammal is so small. Thanks to Connie Jean we can see that he/she even fits in one human hand!



The envelope shows great rubber stamp prints. Among the famous Bunny and a glimpse of a Fish, also Alligators and a cool Armadillo.

Evrika Junglle / Planer

I always am very happy when receiving mail art. However sometimes it isn't easy to find out who has sent it. Which is both a nice puzzle and frustrating :-)
Sometimes I never get to know who the creator / sender is, and sometimes there is doubt.
The latter is concerning this beautiful rubberstamp-drawn-written piece of mail art, of which it took me three days to try to find more info about the sender. And still in doubt.

Is it from Planer (who is Planer)? Is it from Vladimir Tolstov? Do I read well that the first name of the drawing artist is Evrika? Evrika Junglle??
The stamp reveals (viva los postage stamps!) that it has been sent from Russia, so probably not sent by the one who added an artistamp and suitable postage stamp, A. Moreno.
While 'Prolaventa' combined with Maya (see below) reminds us of Evrika Junglle.



Enough about question marks. Let's start to enjoy the mail art! Probably not meant for this mail art project, there are so many great animals shown that this mail art needs to be shown here. too.
The interesting drawing above. Alas I don't speak Russian, but this round-mouthed person seems to say 'ОПЯТЬ ДЫРЫ!?', and according to online translators this means 'Another hole!?'! Good work by the Rodent.
The human being is shown both on the artistamp and the postage stamp, and see the Mail Turtle rubber stamp, the Turtle hard working delivering snail turtle mail!



Inside the envelope beautiful ancient Maya art, combined with contemporary Maya art rubberstamp prints.

Great rubberstamp prints on the back of the envelope, too. The Kangaroo, an extraordinary Marsupial from Australia, and a Jaguar, I think it is, from the fact that this dotted Feline is located close to the word Jungl(l)e.

An other weird interesting Austalian animal is the Monitor Lizard (Varanus), a large reptile.
Here pictured by Valentine Mark Herman, who makes a lot of great dot-art, and sent me this from France.



And see the postage stamp, a new French stamp, about which you can find some more information on Hawwa's weblog. By the augmented picture on her website I learned to take a closer look to this stamp and learned that there's not only this La Poste woman, but also two playing children on the picture.
