Katerina Nikoltsou (26)

Here he is, our dear deep sea friend: the Blobfish!

Created and sent from Greece by Katerina Nikoltsou.

The Blobfish came in one of these envelopes:

See Thom Courcelle's 'safety pin' artistamp:

The envelopes' stamps show Human beings:

(I don't know why female dancers need less postage than male dancers?)

The other envelope contained Owls:

And they contained Katerina's contribution to my 'what or whom is she staring at?' mail art project:

Thank you very much, Katerina!

The Blobfish is an intriguing animal, and I was very happy to receive this great drawing and background information from John:
"The blobfish lives off the coasts of Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. It is a deep sea fish. Its flesh is a gelatinous mass with a density less than water.
It is now an endangered species."

By the way, I found a short movie about the Blobfish, in which you can see how the Blobfish is supposed to look like when he/she is in his/her own environment, in deep water. See this link.

The stamps show another endangered Fish, the Wolffish (and three ladies who turned their backs upon them, leaving the Wolffish behind in bewilderment).

And the air mail sticker in a good place :-)

Thank you very much, John!

Nicole Eippers (5)

Ontvangen van Nicole Eippers uit België, deze prachtige Okapi envelop! Met natuurlijk het Nicole's typische varkentjes. En mensen en de rode wouw.

Received from Nicole Eippers from Belgium, this beautiful Okapi envelope! Also of course Nicole's typical pigs. And human beings and the Red kite.

En binnenin... De Blobvis, een diepzeevis die boven water als 'n plumpudding in elkaar zakt... En een Australische bergduivel (Moloch Horridus).

And inside... The Blobfish, a deep sea fish who - once outside of the water - drops like a plum pudding... And a thorny devil (Moloch Horridus).

Hartelijk dank, Nicole!

Two animals were sent from Belgium by Mart1.
The Tapir, one of my favorite weird animals, you see below. And above you see the Blobfish!
Even if the fish him/herself wouldn't have been weird, he/she would be weird because of the name! Just have a try: say 'blobfish' to yourself 14 times while looking in the mirror with a serious face and try not to laugh!..

Though - the Blobfish indeed is weird! Living in deep sea (600 to 1200 meters, near Australia) a gas bladder, which fish usually have, wouldn't work. Instead of that, the Blobfish' flesh is a jelly-like mass. He doesn't need much muscles, as he just eats what comes close. Blob!

Blobfish and Tapir are accompanied by an interesting collaged envelop. When you take a close look at the backside, you can notice some butterflies, too!

Thank you, dankjewel, Mart1, voor deze verrassende bijdrage!
